The Social Democratic Party’s national chairman, Shehu Gabam, remains in his position, according to Segun Oyegbolu, the party’s former governorship candidate in Ondo State. Oyegbolu made this statement during an interview on Arise Television’s “Prime Time” programme, responding to questions about Gabam’s recent expulsion from the party.
Gabam’s expulsion has been a subject of controversy, with the chairman himself insisting that he is still the legitimate leader of the SDP. Oyegbolu echoed this sentiment, asserting that the party is not in crisis and that Gabam continues to serve as national chairman. He disputed the legitimacy of those who claim to have expelled Gabam, saying they are not recognized by the party or the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Oyegbolu pointed out that all state chairmen of the SDP were verified by INEC as of 30 January this year, and that any claims of Gabam’s expulsion or suspension are unfounded. He likened such claims to “beer‑parlour stories” that should not be taken seriously.
The controversy surrounding Gabam’s expulsion highlights ongoing power struggles within the SDP. The party has been facing internal conflicts, and the dispute over Gabam’s leadership is just one aspect of a larger issue. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the party will resolve its internal differences and move forward. The national leadership crisis has significant implications for the SDP’s future and its ability to participate effectively in the political process, with members and supporters closely watching for a resolution.
