The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has clarified that members expelled during its National Convention can no longer be considered a faction and are not authorized to expel other party members. Party chieftain Umar Sani made this statement on Arise Television’s Morning Show, emphasizing that the expulsions were carried out through a formal process. He explained that a motion was moved, seconded and passed at the convention, resulting in the expulsion of certain members. The party did not expel anyone in secret, and the convention’s outcome is final because no court has declared it illegal.
Sani further noted that an expelled member has no right to claim they have expelled others, as they are no longer recognized as a faction within the PDP. He provided context, stating that the National Working Committee (NWC) of Umar Damagum was dissolved by a motion proposed by the Governor of Plateau State at the convention. Following that dissolution, the Kabiru Turaki‑led NWC was sworn in and began work immediately, bringing clarity to the party’s structure and leadership.
The clarification comes as the PDP navigates internal dynamics and prepares for future elections. As one of Nigeria’s major political parties, the PDP has been working to strengthen its organization and address internal conflicts. The expulsion of certain members and the subsequent clarification of their status aim to promote unity and stability within the party. Leadership has emphasized the importance of following established procedures and respecting the decisions made at the National Convention, demonstrating a commitment to democratic principles and adherence to the party constitution. Moving forward, the PDP is likely to focus on rebuilding and consolidating its base to present a strong challenge in upcoming elections.
