A group of legacy members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau State, calling themselves the Concerned Plateau APC Legacy Members, have warned against attempts to block Governor Caleb Mutfwang from joining the party. The group, affiliated with the APC since its formation on 6 February 2013, says it has consistently worked to build the party, achieving major electoral gains such as the governorship and several legislative seats.
According to the group’s convener, Emmanuel Dankasa, some disgruntled individuals have staged protests, claiming to represent the APC membership in Plateau State. The Concerned Plateau APC Legacy Members condemned these actions as ill‑advised and counter‑productive, suggesting that those involved should face disciplinary measures if they are indeed card‑carrying party members.
The group noted that the APC has a history of welcoming defectors, citing recent examples in Jos and Lokoja, Kogi State. They questioned why the party would not extend a similar welcome to a sitting governor—potentially one of the most significant additions to the party in Plateau State since its inception. Although Governor Mutfwang has not officially confirmed his intention to join the APC, the legacy members believe his move would be a major gain for the party.
They urged the governor to address the plight of sacked workers from Plateau’s tertiary institutions and to review the beneficiaries of certain opportunities to ensure they are truly deserving, regardless of political affiliation. The Concerned Plateau APC Legacy Members also appealed to genuine APC supporters to back the governor’s possible entry into national politics, highlighting the benefits of aligning with the ruling party under President Bola Tinubu.
The development comes as the APC continues to navigate the complexities of Nigerian politics. The legacy members emphasized the importance of unity and strategic growth within the party. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the APC will respond to Governor Mutfwang’s potential defection and the concerns raised by the legacy members, a decision that could have significant implications for the party’s dynamics in Plateau State and its broader national ambitions.
