Ogun Govt seals Adatan market, restaurant over environmental infractions

The Ogun State Government has introduced a new approach to curb the indiscriminate dumping of refuse on roads. Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Ola Oresanya, announced at a meeting with the Governor’s Elders Advisory Council that the law prohibits dumping refuse on roadways and that offenders will now face arrest, correction and community service. Residents are expected to place their waste in front of their homes for collection by Private Sector Participants (PSPs).

To reduce the financial burden on citizens, the state is shifting its enforcement strategy from monetary fines to community service. Offenders will be required to sweep roads, collect refuse and perform other tasks as a deterrent. The government’s broader waste‑management efforts include investing in new equipment for the Ministry of Environment and procuring brand‑new trucks for OGWAMA and the private waste sector, a move approved by Governor Dapo Abiodun to enhance waste management across the state.

In addition to waste management, the ministry has cracked down on noise pollution, shutting down several religious centres and facilities that violated noise regulations. Residents can report disturbances through a dedicated helpline. The commissioner stressed that sanitation is a daily responsibility, citing Section 6 of the Constitution, which empowers Local Government Health Officers to inspect homes and prosecute non‑compliant households.

The ministry is also inspecting gas plants statewide to ensure compliance with safety standards, with substandard facilities slated for closure. The Governor’s Elders Advisory Council praised these initiatives, describing the 2026 Budget of Sustainable Legacy as a well‑structured roadmap for a prosperous new year.

Overall, the state’s initiatives aim to promote environmental sustainability and public health through community service, education, and stricter enforcement of waste‑management, noise‑pollution and safety standards, fostering a cleaner and healthier environment for all residents.
