PDP Urges North’s Elite to Form Security Committee

The Peoples Democratic Party in Zamfara State is calling for the establishment of a regional security committee to address the rising insecurity in Northern Nigeria. According to Haliru Andi, the party’s Publicity Secretary, this committee would bring together Northern leaders, including governors, traditional rulers, and civil society groups, to develop strategies aimed at reducing banditry and other criminal activities.

Andi made the call on Friday in Gusau, the state capital, proposing that Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State lead the committee. He cited Governor Lawal’s recent position paper on insecurity, presented at the Northern Governors’ Forum and Northern Emirs meeting in Kaduna, as a testament to his suitability for the role. The proposed committee would unite Northern leaders to tackle the growing insecurity in the region, which has been plagued by banditry, kidnapping, and other crimes.

The PDP’s call for a regional security committee comes as insecurity continues to worsen in Northern Nigeria. The region has seen a significant increase in violent crimes, including banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism, which have resulted in the loss of lives and displacement of people. The establishment of a regional security committee could provide a coordinated approach to addressing these security challenges, leveraging the expertise and resources of Northern leaders and stakeholders.

Governor Lawal’s experience in tackling insecurity in Zamfara State makes him a suitable candidate to lead the proposed committee. His policies and initiatives have shown promise in reducing crime in the state, and his leadership could help to replicate these successes across the region. The committee’s ability to chart a new course in the fight against crime in Northern Nigeria would depend on its ability to bring together diverse stakeholders and develop effective strategies to address the root causes of insecurity.

The proposed regional security committee has the potential to make a significant impact in addressing the insecurity in Northern Nigeria. By bringing together Northern leaders and stakeholders, the committee could develop a comprehensive approach to tackling banditry, kidnapping, and other crimes, and help to restore peace and stability to the region. As the security situation in Northern Nigeria continues to deteriorate, the establishment of a regional security committee could be a crucial step towards finding a lasting solution to the region’s security challenges.
