PDP Slams Defecting Rivers Lawmakers as Enemies of Democracy

PDP to hold special Expanded National Caucus meeting Monday

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticized the defection of 17 Rivers State House of Assembly members to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing their actions as a mockery of the legislative arm of government. According to Comrade Ini Ememobong, PDP National Publicity Secretary, the lawmakers are acting on behalf of their “demigod and paymasters.”

The defection, which occurred on Friday, was led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, who announced the move during a plenary session. Amaewhule cited factionalization within the PDP as the reason for their decision, stating that he had formally notified his ward chairman of his exit from the party and had joined the APC.

The PDP has condemned the lawmakers’ actions, stating that they will be remembered as “enemies of democracy” who have made a mockery of the legislature. The party noted that this is not the first time the lawmakers have defected, having done so previously and later recanted.

The defection is seen as a significant development in Nigerian politics, particularly in the lead-up to future elections. The PDP has expressed disappointment in the lawmakers’ decision, emphasizing that their actions are driven by external influences rather than a genuine commitment to the democratic process.

The Rivers State House of Assembly has 32 members, with the PDP having held a majority prior to the defection. The APC has welcomed the defectors, viewing the move as a boost to their party’s presence in the state.

The development has sparked interest in the political landscape of Rivers State, with many watching to see how the situation will unfold. As the political environment continues to evolve, the actions of the defected lawmakers are likely to have significant implications for the state’s governance and the broader political landscape in Nigeria.
