Edo LP senator, Ned Imasuen backs Julius Abure's sack as National Chairman

The Labour Party has successfully conducted its congresses across 35 states in Nigeria, resulting in the emergence of new leaders. According to the party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, the outcome demonstrates the party’s commitment to internal democracy, allowing members to freely choose their leaders without interference. The congresses, which began on Tuesday and concluded on Saturday, were monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission and security agencies.

Abure stated that the party received no negative reports from its national monitoring team, describing the exercise as one of the most transparent congresses in Nigeria. Party spokesman Obiora Ifoh quoted Abure as saying the congresses were a test of the party’s reforms, which emphasize the supremacy of the party over individual interests. Under his leadership, Abure noted, the party has prioritized adherence to its rules and authority, ensuring that no individual is above the party.

However, Abia State was excluded from participating due to a court injunction obtained by individuals allegedly working for the state government. The party has chosen to comply with the court order and has instructed its legal team to seek the injunction’s vacation as soon as possible.

The successful conduct of the congresses is seen as a significant step toward the party’s preparation for the 2027 general election. Abure expressed confidence that the party is ready for the election, having addressed its internal challenges, and called on members to support the newly elected state executives to build on the party’s achievements in the last general election. The Labour Party’s commitment to internal democracy and transparency is expected to boost its credibility and appeal to voters ahead of 2027. With its new leadership in place, the party is poised to play a significant role in Nigeria’s political landscape, and its ability to maintain democratic principles and build on recent successes will be crucial to its electoral fortunes.
