The Plateau State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has clarified its stance on the rumored defection of Governor Caleb Mutfwang to the party. Despite growing speculation, the state chairman, Rufus Bature, has emphasized that the governor must follow the proper procedures to join the party.
In recent weeks, various political groups in Plateau State have held press conferences and rallies, with some backing the governor’s potential move to the APC and others strongly opposing it. Key APC figures, including national chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, have publicly rejected the idea of Mutfwang’s defection.
Governor Mutfwang has repeatedly denied switching parties, instead claiming that APC members have been urging him to join. However, Bature stated that the governor must consult with the party’s leaders and follow the required procedures. “The governor should follow the proper channel. Let him consult with the leaders of the party first. We have leaders at the national level, he should meet with them,” he said.
According to Bature, joining the party requires discussions and mutual agreement. “There must be negotiations, give-and-take, for us to accept him. Let him come in a proper way. That is all we are saying.” The APC needs to clearly understand the governor’s intentions, Bature added. “Politics is about dialogue and negotiations. If the terms and conditions are good for the party, they will accept him. But if we don’t know his intentions for coming into the party, that is where the issue arises.”
As of now, Governor Mutfwang has not personally informed the APC national chairman of any decision to join the party. The development has sparked debate among party members and supporters, with some groups speaking out in favor of or against the potential defection. The APC’s stance on the matter highlights the importance of following proper procedures and engaging in open dialogue in political decision-making. The outcome of this situation will likely have significant implications for the political landscape in Plateau State.
