Peter Ameh, the national secretary of the Coalition of United Political Parties, claims that the Bola Tinubu administration is increasingly worried about Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi as the 2027 elections draw near. In an interview with Seun Okinbaloye on The Micon Podcast, Ameh said the government is deliberately trying to keep Obi off the ballot. He said his assessment is based on “data collection and engagements” conducted behind closed doors, which indicate that Obi is the only candidate the government views as a genuine threat.
Ameh pointed to the repeated targeting of Obi by presidential aide Bayo Onanuga on social media as evidence of the administration’s concern. He added that President Tinubu is not fearful of other potential contenders such as Atiku Abubakar or Rotimi Amaechi; instead, the political establishment is more alarmed by Obi’s rising popularity. Obi’s Labour Party campaign has recently gained traction, focusing on key national issues and attracting a growing base of support.
According to Ameh, the government’s efforts to block Obi’s candidacy are significant and will likely shape the upcoming electoral landscape. He noted that, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) previously failed to defeat Tinubu in Lagos, Obi managed to secure a substantial vote share in that region and even helped defeat the APC in the Federal Capital Territory. Ameh argues that these results demonstrate Obi’s electoral strength and explain the government’s apprehension.
As the 2027 elections approach, the political environment is expected to intensify, with parties and candidates jostling for position. Ameh’s allegations will be closely monitored, and their impact on the electoral process remains to be seen. Ongoing observation and timely updates will be essential as more information emerges.
