The African Democratic Congress (ADC) praised the Federal Government’s swift response to the failed coup in the Benin Republic, while urging President Bola Tinubu to show the same urgency in tackling Nigeria’s rising insecurity. In a statement released on Monday, ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi highlighted how pro‑government forces, supported by Nigerian troops and air power, quickly overpowered soldiers who had seized Benin’s national television station and declared the ouster of President Patrice Talon. The ADC commended the decisive action taken in a foreign territory.
However, the party questioned the disparity between that response and the government’s handling of security threats within Nigeria’s own borders. Abdullahi noted that, despite the rapid intervention in Benin, the government has not demonstrated comparable urgency in confronting banditry, terrorism and violent crime at home. This inconsistency raises concerns about the government’s priorities and its commitment to protecting Nigerian citizens.
The ADC stressed that defending democracy requires more than military action; it also demands good governance, improved citizen welfare and tolerance for opposing views. The party called on the government to address domestic insecurity with the same determination shown in Benin, emphasizing that safeguarding Nigerian lives is essential for sustaining democracy.
The failed coup in Benin has drawn attention to regional security dynamics and the importance of cooperation among neighboring countries. Nigeria’s role in stabilising the situation has been acknowledged, and the ADC’s statement serves as a reminder that the government must also prioritise the security and well‑being of its own people. As Nigeria continues to grapple with insecurity, its response will be closely watched both domestically and internationally.
