Emmanuel Ogidi, a senior official of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and caretaker chairman for the South‑South region, said the party can still reclaim power from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections despite its current internal crisis. Speaking on Channels Television’s *Politics Today* program on Monday, Ogidi described the PDP as “a beacon of hope for democracy” that continues to oppose the ruling party. “We are fighting a system that is trying to destroy democracy. There is hope for democracy because PDP is the face of the opposition. PDP stands for democracy,” he asserted.
The PDP has been grappling with internal challenges that have prompted the resignation of several members, including former spokesman Kola Ologbondiyan. These difficulties have raised doubts about the party’s ability to mount a strong challenge to the APC in future elections. Nevertheless, Ogidi’s remarks indicate that the PDP remains committed to its democratic ideals and is working to resolve its internal differences.
The party’s capacity to overcome the crisis and present a united front will be crucial to its prospects in the 2027 elections. As Nigeria’s main opposition party, the PDP plays a vital role in keeping the country’s democratic system vibrant and competitive. Its struggles have significant implications for the political landscape, and both observers and citizens will be closely watching how the party recovers.
With the 2027 elections still several years away, the PDP has time to regroup and refocus its efforts. However, it must act swiftly to address internal issues and offer a compelling alternative to the ruling APC.
