Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission urges industry compliance

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has emphasized the importance of adherence to operational standards in the power sector, urging Compliance Officers from the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) to uphold these standards. This call to action was made during a strategic review session in Abuja, where the Commission convened a Compliance Peer Review Meeting to assess industry-wide compliance.

NERC’s Commissioner for Legal, Licence and Compliance, Dafe Akpeneye, acknowledged the progress made so far while stressing the need for renewed commitment to compliance. Hauwa Yakubu, the Commission’s Head of Compliance, explained that the meeting aimed to evaluate licensees’ compliance performance across the entire electricity value chain, highlighting key enforcement actions taken between January and November. She also underscored the significance of new regulatory frameworks in enhancing compliance.

The review session covered key areas, including compliance performance across NESI, assessment of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) indices, evaluation of financial reporting obligations, and updates on metering implementation and adherence to standards. Compliance Officers from licensed operators across the industry participated in the session, which reinforced the Commission’s commitment to promoting accountability and operational excellence in the sector.

The meeting’s outcome is expected to have a positive impact on the Nigerian electricity supply industry, as it seeks to improve overall compliance and adherence to operational standards. By emphasizing the importance of compliance, NERC aims to ensure a more efficient and reliable electricity supply, ultimately benefiting consumers and stakeholders across the country. The Commission’s efforts to promote accountability and operational excellence are crucial in addressing the challenges facing the power sector and improving the overall quality of service.
