Adeleke’s Party Switch Won’t Boost Election Chances

Rivers APC Defends Strategy Amid Calls for Wike to Join

The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has responded to Governor Ademola Adeleke’s recent defection to the Accord Party, describing the move as “good riddance.” The APC stated that Adeleke’s decision to join the Accord Party would not impact his electoral prospects in the 2026 governorship election.

According to a statement by the Osun APC chairman, Tajudeen Lawal, Adeleke’s departure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was expected. The party claimed that residents had lost confidence in Adeleke’s administration, which they alleged was characterized by deceits and subterfuge. The APC also accused Adeleke of abandoning the PDP and its elected members for personal reasons, rather than addressing the party’s internal crises.

The APC questioned the significance of Adeleke’s defection, stating that it did not constitute a genuine political realignment. The party noted that Adeleke had been rejected by other political parties before joining the Accord Party, which it described as lacking national influence. The Accord Party, according to the APC, has no governors or significant recognition in the country.

The Osun APC welcomed Adeleke’s move, stating that it would make it easier for the party to defeat him in the forthcoming election. The party expressed confidence in its preparation and commitment to the electoral process, citing Adeleke’s poor performance in office as a reason for his likely defeat. The APC chairman, Lawal, stated that Adeleke’s three-year tenure had failed to meet the state’s developmental needs, and that residents were eager for a change in leadership.

Adeleke’s defection to the Accord Party was announced on Tuesday, with the governor confirming his intention to seek re-election in 2026. The move follows weeks of consultation and deliberation with stakeholders and opinion leaders. The APC’s response highlights the political tensions in Osun State ahead of the 2026 governorship election, with the party poised to challenge Adeleke’s re-election bid. As the election approaches, the Osun APC’s confidence in its preparations and the perceived weaknesses of Adeleke’s administration may play a significant role in shaping the state’s political landscape.
