Sudan’s Ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, Hassan Hamid, has outlined Africa’s migration priorities and challenges during the 116th session of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Council. As Coordinator of the African Group on Migration Affairs, Ambassador Hamid expressed appreciation for the IOM’s role in Africa, particularly in convening the first African Ministerial Roundtable on the sidelines of this year’s Council. The roundtable provided a platform for African ministers to engage in frank dialogue and foster consensus on shared continental priorities in migration.
The African continent is facing escalating challenges amid displacement crises, particularly in Sudan, the Sahel, and the Horn of Africa. Ambassador Hamid emphasized the need to expand regular migration pathways, strengthen labor partnerships and skills recognition, reduce remittance costs, support border management and legal identity, and combat human trafficking. He also welcomed the IOM Director-General’s recent visit to Sudan following the tragic attacks on civilians in El-Fashir, which triggered new waves of displacement.
The African Group is concerned about potential regional repercussions given the multiple conflicts across the continent and the impacts of climate change. Ambassador Hamid cautioned that these factors could exacerbate migration challenges and underscored the importance of collaborative efforts to address these issues. The IOM’s support in this regard is crucial, and the African Group values its partnership in promoting safe and orderly migration.
The African Group’s statement highlighted the need for international cooperation to address the root causes of migration and to promote sustainable development. Ambassador Hamid reaffirmed Africa’s commitment to actively participating in the 2026 International Migration Review Forum and collaborating with the IOM and all partners to promote safe and orderly migration that advances the continent’s development and the well-being of its people.
The 2026 International Migration Review Forum will provide a critical opportunity for the international community to assess progress and challenges in implementing the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration. Africa’s participation in this forum will be crucial in shaping the global migration agenda and addressing the continent’s unique migration challenges. As the international community moves forward, it is essential to prioritize collaborative efforts to promote safe and orderly migration, reduce the risks associated with irregular migration, and maximize the benefits of migration for development.
