Nairobi hosts urgent UN talks on planet in crisis

The United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA‑7) has convened in Nairobi, Kenya, bringing together delegates from more than 170 countries to tackle climate change, biodiversity loss, land degradation and pollution. Running from December 8 to 12, the assembly seeks practical solutions to real‑world problems such as the environmental impact of emerging technologies, melting glaciers and rising seaweed blooms.

Inger Andersen, Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), stressed that investing in a stable climate and healthy nature can generate significant economic benefits, prevent millions of premature deaths and lift hundreds of millions out of poverty and hunger. She emphasized that cooperation across borders and sectors is essential, because no single country can solve the crisis alone.

Kenyan President William Ruto highlighted Africa’s disproportionate vulnerability to the environmental crisis, citing failed harvests and destructive floods as examples. He called for aligning economic growth with environmental action, advocating a fair, accessible and affordable transformation that decouples growth from emissions and pollution.

UNEA‑7 provides a critical platform for governments, international organisations and stakeholders to discuss and agree on solutions to the world’s environmental challenges. The meeting will focus on climate change, biodiversity conservation and pollution reduction, aiming to produce concrete outcomes and commitments from participating countries. As delegates negotiate and debate, the assembly’s results will be closely watched as the international community strives to advance the Sustainable Development Goals and address the escalating environmental emergency. The success of UNEA‑7 will be pivotal in shaping a sustainable future for generations to come.
