The Abia State Government has announced that the winners of the Abia State Secondary School Unity Games will be awarded the Obisia Nwankpa medal, in honor of the late Olympian. This was disclosed by the State’s Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Nwaobilor Ananaba, during a state burial ceremony held at the Umuahia Township Stadium.
The ceremony was organized by the Abia State government to pay tribute to the late Obisie Nwankpa, a renowned boxer who passed away at the age of 75. The Commissioner, represented by the Special Assistant to the Abia State Governor on Sports, Mr. Raymond Ukwa, noted that the honor was a testament to Nwankpa’s commitment to serving his state and country.
Through this initiative, Nwankpa’s legacy will live on in Abia schools, sports development system, and in the dreams of young Abians who strive for excellence. The Commissioner extended condolences to the Nwankpa family on behalf of the Abia State government, acknowledging the deceased as a member of the generation that defined sports in Nigeria.
Obisie Nwankpa had a distinguished career in boxing, winning 23 out of 29 fights, with 16 knockouts. He won a gold medal at the 1973 All African Games in Lagos and another gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. Nwankpa also participated in the 1972 Munich Olympics as a light welterweight boxer.
The Abia State Director of Sports, Obioma George, described Nwankpa as a warrior who excelled in his chosen career. Nwankpa’s achievements have left a lasting impact on the sports community, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of athletes.
The late Obisie Nwankpa was laid to rest on Friday in Okpulukwu Umuosu, Nsulu, Isiala Ngwa North LGA. The Abia State government’s tribute to Nwankpa serves as a reminder of the importance of recognizing and honoring the contributions of sports legends who have made significant impacts on their communities and countries.
