Nigeria Airlines Face Probe Over High Airfare Hike

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has launched an expanded investigation into the recent surge in airfare prices by Nigerian airlines. This move follows widespread outrage and concerns over the high ticket rates charged by domestic airlines, particularly on local routes. The Nigerian Senate had earlier called for a comprehensive investigation, alleging exploitation by the airlines.

The FCCPC’s probe aims to establish possible violations of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA). The investigation will focus on operators on identified routes, including the South-East and South-South regions. The commission will examine pricing patterns, the basis for the increases, and any practices that could undermine fair competition.

According to the FCCPC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Ondaje Ijagwu, the investigation is ongoing, despite a court action by Air Peace seeking to restrain the commission from examining its pricing mechanisms. The commission has assured that it will apply appropriate enforcement measures if evidence of violations is found.

The Executive Vice Chairman of the FCCPC, Mr. Tunji Bello, emphasized that the commission is not a price control board but is empowered to check exploitation of consumers. He stated that the commission will not hesitate to act if evidence shows that consumers’ welfare or market competitiveness are being undermined.

The investigation into the arbitrary spike in airfares is a response to numerous complaints from the public. The FCCPC has vowed to protect Nigerian consumers from exploitation, ensuring that they are treated fairly in the market. The commission’s actions are guided by the FCCPA 2018, which empowers it to promote fair competition and protect consumers.

As the investigation continues, the FCCPC will review pricing patterns and practices to determine if they comply with the law. If evidence of breaches is found, the commission will take enforcement measures to address the violations. The outcome of the investigation will be crucial in determining the next steps to ensure that consumers are protected and that the airline industry operates fairly and competitively.
