Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has praised the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for its efforts to stabilize and reposition the party. The commendation was made during a consultative visit by the PDP NWC, led by National Chairman Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, to Obasanjo’s residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Obasanjo commended the NWC for its strides in reinvigorating the party, urging the committee to remain committed to its mission and uphold discipline within the party. He emphasized the importance of adhering to the party’s rules and regulations, stating that “anybody who wants to belong to a political party must adhere strictly to its rules and regulations.” The former president encouraged the committee to continue its work with diligence, saying “things are not beyond repairs. Soldier on. You are doing very well.”
Obasanjo highlighted the significance of a strong and focused opposition in a democratic system, charging the NWC to prioritize the nation’s interest. He noted that the current challenges facing Nigeria require all political actors to play constructive roles, putting the country’s interest first. The former president offered his wealth of experience and political insights to the leadership, affirming his readiness to provide guidance when necessary.
In response, PDP National Chairman Kabiru Tanimu Turaki expressed gratitude for Obasanjo’s supportive words, stating that the former president’s advice and counsel are invaluable to the party. Turaki explained that the NWC visited Obasanjo to tap into his experience and gain insight into the party’s future and the state of the nation.
The meeting between Obasanjo and the PDP NWC comes at a time when Nigeria is facing various challenges, and the former president’s comments may be seen as a call to action for the party to play a more significant role in addressing the nation’s problems. As the PDP continues to reposition itself, Obasanjo’s guidance and support may be crucial in shaping the party’s future direction. With the former president’s emphasis on discipline and adherence to party rules, the PDP may be expected to undergo significant reforms in the coming months.
