Mallam Ali Temitope Abdulssalam, a prominent Islamic scholar in Ibadan, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s federal government to investigate and address the root causes of insurgency, banditry, kidnappings and ritual killings in Nigeria. Speaking at the fifth graduation ceremony of the Ali Institute for Qur’an Memorisation, he stressed that swift action is needed to restore public confidence in the government and to secure the country’s progress.
The ceremony was attended by notable figures, including the wife of a former Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Professor Hamdalat Olaniyan, and the Agbaoye of Ibadanland, Alhaji Kola Karim, who was represented by Alhaji Yinka Karim. As director of the institute, Abdulssalam highlighted the importance of supporting Islamic knowledge centres. He argued that such institutions can nurture future leaders who are God‑fearing, patriotic and free from vices such as tribalism and terrorism, noting that a balanced understanding of the Qur’an and Islamic values reduces the likelihood of engaging in social ills.
Abdulssalam urged the government to provide funding and support for Qur’an and Islamic knowledge centres, emphasizing a balanced education that incorporates virtues and morals. He also called for an enabling environment that promotes good values and incentivises individuals who demonstrate positive behaviour.
Representing the Agbaoye, Alhaji Yinka Karim encouraged the graduands to be good ambassadors, urging them to reflect their character in their actions at all times. The ceremony marked an important milestone for the institute’s mission to promote Islamic knowledge and values in Nigeria. The federal government’s response to the nation’s security challenges will be crucial in restoring public confidence and ensuring Nigeria’s progress, as Abdulssalam emphasized that addressing the root causes of insurgency, banditry and other threats is essential for a safer, more stable environment for all Nigerians.
