Uganda Mufti Calls for Unity Ahead of Elections

The Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, has urged mosque leaders to promote unity and economic empowerment among Muslim communities ahead of the country’s upcoming national elections. Speaking at the 2nd Annual Eastern Regional Imaams’ Retreat in Mbale City, Mufti Mubaje cautioned that poverty and internal divisions can make religious leaders vulnerable to manipulation.

Over 3,000 Imaams from 11 Muslim districts in Eastern Uganda attended the three-day retreat, which focused on modern communication, leadership, and economic development. The event, organized by the Office of the Eastern Muslim Regional Assistant to the Mufti, aimed to equip Imaams with skills to guide their communities effectively.

Mufti Mubaje emphasized the importance of unity among Muslims, citing past experiences of sectarian disputes rooted in minor theological differences. He encouraged sustained dialogue and structured seminars to promote shared values and understanding, particularly between elders and youth. The Mufti also urged Imaams to adopt self-sustaining economic initiatives, warning that financial vulnerability can expose them to exploitation.

As part of efforts to promote financial inclusion, the Mufti launched five new Savings and Credit Cooperatives (SACCOs) for several districts in Eastern Uganda. He also encouraged Imaams to register for an ongoing SACCO initiative, which awaits presidential support. The Mufti’s call for economic empowerment is significant, given the high levels of poverty in some Muslim communities in Uganda.

The retreat’s convenor, Dr. Sheikh Ahmad Hamid Wadenga, noted that the program aimed to deepen Islamic values while operationalizing the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council’s amended constitution. The constitution provides for the inclusion of women and youth in leadership, and Dr. Wadenga urged Imaams to work closely with these groups to tap into government poverty alleviation programs.

As Uganda prepares for national elections, Mufti Mubaje called for discipline and restraint, urging Imaams to guide their followers towards peaceful participation and national stability. The Mufti’s message is crucial in promoting social cohesion and preventing potential conflicts during the election period. By emphasizing unity, economic empowerment, and peaceful coexistence, the Mufti and other Muslim leaders can play a significant role in promoting stability and development in Uganda.
