Morocco braces for an AFCON festival beyond football

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations will kick off in Morocco on December 21, and the host cities are busy with final preparations. Flags, banners and the colors of the participating teams line the streets and main avenues, while fan zones fine‑tune their setups to welcome supporters. With less than a week to go, the atmosphere is gradually building across the country.

In Casablanca, however, public enthusiasm appears relatively muted. Apart from a few billboards displaying the countdown, the city shows little visible excitement. One resident explained, “The excitement isn’t really visible here, especially in Casablanca, apart from a few posters announcing the countdown. But I think this CAN will be a success, at least in terms of logistics and organisation. It will only truly be a success if Morocco wins the tournament.” Some locals feel that Morocco must win for the event to be considered a triumph.

Other supporters are more optimistic, believing that passion will surge once the competition begins. “We’re now less than a week from the CAN, and I think the excitement is about to explode,” said one fan. “Everyone is waiting for the start, for that first match, that first ball, that first kick‑off to launch what is going to be an extraordinary celebration.” He added that the tournament will bring together fans from all participating nations, turning it into a “big festival” that goes beyond football.

The Africa Cup of Nations is a major international tournament held every two years, featuring national teams from across the continent. Morocco is hosting for the second time, after previously doing so in 1988. The 2025 edition will involve 24 teams divided into six groups, with the top two from each group advancing to the knockout stage. Millions of fans worldwide are expected to tune in, and Morocco’s rich football history and passionate supporters position the country well to host a successful event.

As the countdown continues, both fans and organizers are gearing up for what promises to be an exciting and memorable tournament. Additional reporting by Ajar Taufik.
