Nigeria Slides Towards One-Party State Under APC

APC driving Nigeria to one-party state - Babangida Aliyu

Nigeria’s Former Governors’ Forum Chairman, Babangida Aliyu, has expressed concern over the country’s drift towards a one-party system under the All Progressives Congress (APC). Speaking at a meeting between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Working Committee (NWC) and the Former Ministers’ Forum, Aliyu noted the shrinking political space, induced defections, and weakening of opposition institutions.

The former Niger State Governor stated that the APC’s aggressive maneuvers to eliminate opposition are a clear indication of Nigeria’s slide towards a one-party state. He emphasized the importance of a vibrant opposition in a thriving democracy and congratulated the newly elected PDP NWC, led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki. Aliyu expressed confidence in the new leadership, saying the PDP is “evolving” and praised Turaki’s efforts to reposition the party.

In response, PDP National Chairman Turaki highlighted the party’s 16-year governance legacy, citing achievements such as the liberalization of the telecoms sector, banking consolidation, and the establishment of anti-corruption agencies like the EFCC and ICPC. Former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau urged the new NWC to remain steadfast, saying they have “done more than expected.”

The meeting’s endorsement of the PDP’s new leadership signals a commitment to strengthening the party’s role in Nigeria’s democracy. This comes amid concerns about political centralization under the APC, with the opposition party seeking to reassert its influence. The PDP’s efforts to revitalize its structure and leadership aim to provide a robust counterbalance to the ruling party.

The development is significant, given Nigeria’s history of political competition and the importance of a strong opposition in holding the government accountable. As the country navigates its democratic journey, the PDP’s renewed efforts to strengthen its position are likely to have implications for the nation’s political landscape. With the new leadership in place, the party is poised to play a more active role in shaping Nigeria’s democratic discourse.
