El-Rufai: He’s an asset but has weakness to work on - SDP chieftain

Nigeria’s political landscape faces a significant threat, according to Adewale Adebayo, the Social Democratic Party’s (SDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections. Adebayo warned that the country is drifting toward a one‑party system, citing the ruling All Progressives Congress’s alleged efforts to stifle opposition voices and shrink democratic space.

During a visit to the Kaduna State SDP Secretariat, Adebayo expressed concern over the APC’s political manoeuvres, which he believes jeopardize Nigeria’s democracy. He alleged that some political leaders have conspired to concentrate power in a single dominant party, undermining genuine competition. The candidate emphasized that issues such as hunger, unemployment and insecurity affect all Nigerians, regardless of region, religion or age.

Adebayo also criticized the Peoples Democratic Party, stating that it now faces consequences for failing to deliver justice during its 16 years in power. He urged Nigerians not to be deceived by politicians who engage citizens only during election periods, emphasizing that the SDP remains a viable alternative.

Furthermore, Adebayo faulted President Bola Tinubu’s administration, claiming it responds more quickly to international figures than to local concerns. He called on the Kaduna SDP chapter to strengthen grassroots mobilisation and secure a permanent party secretariat ahead of the 2027 elections, stressing the need for nationwide mobilisation to resist alleged attempts to undermine democracy.

These comments come as Nigeria’s political parties prepare for the next election cycle, with concerns over democratic space and political competition likely to remain central. As the country navigates its complex political landscape, Adebayo’s warnings about a drift toward a one‑party system have significant implications for Nigeria’s democratic development. With the 2027 elections on the horizon, the SDP and other opposition parties will face substantial challenges in contesting the ruling APC, and their ability to operate freely and compete fairly will be crucial to the health of Nigeria’s democracy.
