A former governorship candidate in Nigeria’s Gombe State, Jibrin Barde, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Barde, who was the PDP’s candidate in the 2023 governorship election, announced his move on Tuesday, citing his desire to rescue the state from what he described as rule by business interests.
Barde stated that he left the PDP in early 2025 and has since been working with a movement aimed at addressing the country’s challenges, including insecurity, economic hardship, and lack of infrastructure. The movement, dubbed “Salon Tafiya,” involves various leaders across the country, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former governors, and ministers.
According to Barde, his priority is to provide purposeful leadership and improve the state’s infrastructure, education, and security. He criticized the current state of affairs, noting the dearth of infrastructure and rising insecurity. Barde emphasized the need for collective effort towards ensuring a just and egalitarian society, stressing that governance is not about individual interests but about serving the people.
In his remarks, Barde urged residents to join the ADC, describing it as a new era for the state. He also cautioned against selling votes, advising citizens to prioritize the state’s future over short-term gains. Barde’s defection to the ADC is seen as a significant development in the state’s political landscape, particularly ahead of the 2027 general election.
The African Democratic Congress has been gaining momentum in recent times, with many Nigerians seeking alternative platforms to address the country’s challenges. Barde’s move is expected to boost the party’s chances in Gombe State, where the PDP has traditionally been a dominant force. As the 2027 elections approach, political activities are likely to intensify, with various parties and candidates jostling for positions. Barde’s defection and his call for residents to join the ADC may have significant implications for the state’s political landscape in the coming months.
