Airstrikes target ISIS in Somalia by US Africa Command

The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) has conducted airstrikes against ISIS-Somalia in coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia. The strikes, which took place on December 15-16, 2025, targeted the terrorist group’s operations in the vicinity of the Golis Mountains, approximately 70 kilometers southeast of Bossaso.

The airstrikes are part of ongoing efforts by AFRICOM, the Federal Government of Somalia, and the Somali Armed Forces to degrade ISIS-Somalia’s capabilities and prevent the group from posing a threat to the US homeland, American forces, and citizens abroad. The operation highlights the continued cooperation between the US and Somali governments in combating terrorism in the region.

The Golis Mountains have been a known stronghold of ISIS-Somalia, and the airstrikes aim to disrupt the group’s ability to plan and carry out attacks. While specific details about the units and assets involved in the operation will not be released to ensure operational security, the strikes demonstrate the commitment of the US and its partners to countering the terrorist threat in Somalia.

The US has been working closely with the Somali government to build the capacity of the Somali Armed Forces and support their efforts to combat terrorism. The partnership has led to significant progress in recent years, with ISIS-Somalia suffering losses in terms of territory, personnel, and resources. However, the group remains a threat, and continued cooperation between the US and Somalia is essential to preventing its resurgence.

The airstrikes against ISIS-Somalia are a reminder of the ongoing threat posed by terrorist groups in the region and the need for continued international cooperation to counter this threat. As the US and its partners continue to work together to degrade ISIS-Somalia’s capabilities, the significance of these efforts extends beyond the region, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts to address global security challenges.
