The Nigerian government is considering the creation of a specialized financial institution, dubbed the “Bank of Health,” to support the country’s healthcare sector. The idea was first raised by the chairman of Everbright Diagnostics during the laboratory’s 20th‑anniversary celebration, and Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume expressed his backing. Akume said he would submit a memo to President Bola Tinubu for consideration.

The proposed Bank of Health would aim to tackle persistent challenges in Nigeria’s healthcare system, such as chronic underfunding, high‑interest loans for medical providers, and the significant brain drain of health professionals. By offering long‑term, single‑digit financing to credible healthcare providers, the bank would enable affordable credit and investment in much‑needed infrastructure.

Everbright Diagnostics chairman Dr. Everest Okpara argued that the bank is both necessary and feasible, pointing to existing sector‑specific institutions like the Bank of Industry and the Bank of Agriculture. He emphasized that a Bank of Health could curb capital flight, encourage medical professionals to remain in the country, and turn the current brain drain into a “brain gain.”

The government has pledged to strengthen Nigeria’s health system through policies that promote local capacity, expand access to quality care, and support institutions that contribute to national development. In this context, the Bank of Health is seen as a key component that could have a significant impact on the nation’s healthcare landscape. By providing dedicated financing, the institution could help providers invest in modern equipment, training, and facilities, thereby addressing inadequate funding, outdated infrastructure, and the shortage of skilled professionals. With governmental support, the Bank of Health could play a crucial role in transforming Nigeria’s healthcare sector and improving the overall well‑being of its citizens.
