The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has approved the commencement of scheduled flight operations at Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport in Ibadan. In a letter dated December 16, 2025, addressed to the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the NCAA confirmed the issuance of a provisional interim operational permit for scheduled flights. This approval follows a comprehensive review of the airport’s safety‑critical facilities, operational arrangements, and mitigation measures.
The Oyo State Government’s recent upgrades have brought the airport closer to international standards. Improvements include extending and widening the runway, enhancing airfield lighting, and constructing a 500,000‑litre aviation fuel storage facility. Additional developments, such as a new Protocol Lounge and other passenger amenities, are expected to improve the overall travel experience.
The NCAA’s decision marks a significant step forward for an airport that previously held only temporary approval for non‑scheduled operations. The provisional permit remains subject to strict compliance with conditions, notably the full operationalization of emergency response arrangements, and will be reassessed as the airport’s capabilities are further evaluated.
This upgrade is part of a broader effort to strengthen Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure. By enabling scheduled services, the airport is poised to boost regional economic activity, provide more travel options for passengers, and serve as a vital link between the region and the rest of the country. The Oyo State Government’s investment underscores its commitment to developing the region’s infrastructure and enhancing its role in the national aviation sector.
