Bafarawa’s Supporters Defect to APC in Sokoto State

A significant political shift has occurred in Sokoto State, Nigeria, as supporters of former Governor Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa have formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The decision was announced on Wednesday following a consultative meeting of elders and leaders of the Bafarawa Akida Movement, which represents the former governor’s loyalists.

The movement’s chairman, Prof. Hamza Maishanu, explained that the defection was a collective decision reached after extensive consultations with members from all 23 local government areas of the state. According to Maishanu, the elders were impressed by the performance of the current administration under Governor Ahmed Aliyu and its cordial relationship with Bafarawa, which influenced their decision to join the APC.

Maishanu confirmed that the defection is formal and will be followed by further consultations to complete the necessary procedures. He also dismissed claims that the move was motivated by the 2027 elections or external political pressure. Instead, he emphasized that the decision was based on the group’s assessment of the current administration’s performance and its relationship with Bafarawa.

Bafarawa himself has reiterated that he has retired from active politics and has not personally joined the APC. However, he expressed support for his followers’ decision, indicating that he is willing to work with the current administration. This development is significant, as Bafarawa’s loyalists have considerable influence in Sokoto State politics.

The defection of Bafarawa’s supporters to the APC is expected to have implications for the state’s political landscape. As the APC continues to consolidate its power in the state, the PDP will need to regroup and reassess its strategy to remain competitive. The move also underscores the dynamic nature of Nigerian politics, where alliances and affiliations can shift rapidly.

The next steps for the Bafarawa Akida Movement and its members will be crucial in determining the impact of this defection. As they complete the necessary procedures to formalize their membership in the APC, they will likely play a significant role in shaping the party’s policies and direction in Sokoto State. The development is a reminder that political loyalty and affiliation can be fluid in Nigeria, and parties must continually work to maintain the support of their members and constituents.
