Moro Affirms Loyalty to PDP Amid Defections

Benue killings: If government fails, we’ll defend ourselves – Senator Abba Moro

Senator Abba Moro, representing Benue South and leader of the Senate minority, has reaffirmed his commitment to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stating he has no intention of leaving the party. This declaration was made during a consultative session with the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) chaired by Kabiru Turaki.

The PDP has experienced a series of defections since the start of the year, but Moro emphasized that he and other committed members would not abandon the party due to pressure or political intimidation. He described the PDP as the only credible platform for democratic governance in Nigeria, urging the newly elected NWC to collaborate with party leaders to foster cohesion and unity.

Moro emphasized that many party members are not motivated by personal gain or short-term political interests, saying, “We are in PDP to stay. We are not in PDP for the sake of using the platform to win elections, and certainly not fixated on the 2027 elections.” He encouraged the NWC to work towards salvaging the situation, following the national convention.

In response, Kabiru Turaki assured that the party is working to reposition itself, with the goal of saving the country from anti-democratic forces and salvaging multiparty democracy. He commended Moro and other PDP senators for their principled stance, describing them as “pillars of the party.” Turaki emphasized that the 2027 general elections are about the Nigerian people, rather than defections.

Adolphus Wabara, chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT), also praised the party for the successful national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, and promised the BoT’s support for the Turaki-led NWC. He noted that the party appears to be repositioning itself, with structures being strengthened and confidence being restored across the federation. Wabara emphasized the need for unity and reconciliation, stating that the party must focus on healing.

The PDP’s efforts to reposition itself and foster unity come at a critical time, as the party seeks to regain its footing in Nigerian politics. With the 2027 general elections on the horizon, the party’s ability to present a united front and attract voters will be crucial in determining its success. As the party moves forward, it will be important for leaders like Moro, Turaki, and Wabara to continue working towards cohesion and democratic governance.
