A recent incident involving the convoy of Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has been clarified by his Special Adviser on Communications and Strategy, Allen Sowore. The incident, which occurred during the governor’s thank-you tour, resulted in the death of a young man, Good Emiju, at Oka-Akoko, the headquarters of Akoko South-West Local Government Area.
The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had accused the governor and the state government of remaining silent over the incident, which allegedly created tension in the community. However, Sowore dismissed the PDP’s claims as false, stating that the governor’s convoy was not responsible for the death. According to Sowore, a police van attached to the Officer-in-Charge (O.C.) Scorpion was involved in the incident, but it was not part of the governor’s convoy and was on a separate assignment at the time.
Sowore confirmed that the incident occurred on the same day the governor visited Oka-Akoko, but emphasized that the police van was not accompanying the governor. He expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and noted that the police officers involved had taken the victim to the hospital. The Nigeria Police Force is currently engaging with the family following the victim’s demise.
The PDP had criticized the state government for its alleged silence on the matter, but Sowore maintained that the party should verify its facts before issuing statements. He cautioned against spreading incorrect and sensational information that could cause unnecessary tension and apprehension in the state. The incident highlights the importance of accurate reporting and the need for parties to verify information before making public statements. The Ondo State government and the Nigeria Police Force will likely continue to engage with the community to address any concerns and prevent similar incidents in the future.
