Abuja Lokoja Highway traffic restored after military truck driver standoff

Ebonyi Guber: You can only contest against Gov Nwifuru on social media - Umahi

The Abuja–Lokoja Highway has resumed normal traffic flow following a brief disruption caused by a standoff between truck drivers and military personnel. According to Mohammed A. Ahmed, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry of Works, the incident occurred over the weekend and involved the smashing of a truck’s windscreen, prompting truck drivers to block a section of the road. This resulted in severe traffic congestion along the route, causing significant delays and hardship for road users traveling towards Lokoja and other destinations during the festive season.

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, swiftly responded to the situation by directing the immediate reopening of already completed sections of the expressway. He also approved the deployment of necessary measures to restore free movement and alleviate the difficulties experienced by road users. The directive, implemented on Sunday, December 21, 2025, helped decongest the affected corridor and improve traffic flow.

The Abuja–Lokoja Highway is a critical transportation artery, connecting the federal capital to other parts of the country. The recent disruption highlights the importance of maintaining security and order along major roads, particularly during peak travel periods. The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable road transportation nationwide.

In a statement, Minister Umahi appealed to motorists to remain patient, orderly, and cautious, especially during this peak holiday travel period. The government’s prompt response to the incident has helped mitigate the impact of the disruption, and road users can now expect a smoother journey. As the festive season continues, the authorities will likely remain vigilant to prevent similar incidents and ensure the free flow of traffic on major highways. The resumption of normal traffic flow on the Abuja–Lokoja Highway is a welcome development, and the government’s efforts to maintain road safety and efficiency will be closely monitored in the coming days.
