A founding member of the All Progressives Congress, Bisi Akande, has revealed that late former President Muhammadu Buhari informed him that he did not instigate ex-Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to contest against President Bola Tinubu in the 2022 APC primary election. During the election, Tinubu emerged as the party’s flagbearer, while Osinbajo came in third. Osinbajo is widely believed to be a political protégé of Tinubu, having served under him as Commissioner of Justice and Attorney General in Lagos State.
According to Akande, Osinbajo had every right to contest the primary election and did not step down for Tinubu. Akande stated that he wanted all candidates to be free to contest without bitterness, focusing on issues rather than personal attacks. He emphasized his desire for a Yoruba President, which motivated his approach to the primary election.
In an interview on Edmund Obilo’s podcast, State Affairs, Akande discussed his efforts to convince Osinbajo to step down for Tinubu. He explained that after several meetings, some candidates decided to step down on the evening of the primary, but Osinbajo did not. Akande maintained that he did not discuss the matter with Tinubu thereafter and did not blame Osinbajo for contesting the election.
Akande’s claim contradicts statements in Buhari’s biography, which suggests that the late former President did not support Osinbajo’s presidential ambition in 2022. However, according to Akande, Buhari told him that he did not instigate Osinbajo to contest against Tinubu, citing cultural norms where a mentee would not contest against their mentor.
The revelation provides insight into the events surrounding the 2022 APC primary election and the relationships between key figures in the party. As the political landscape continues to evolve, understanding the dynamics at play during this period can offer valuable context for future developments. The announcement serves as a reminder of the complex alliances and interests that shape political decision-making in Nigeria.
