Nigeria’s government has clarified its decision to cooperate with France, even as many West African nations are cutting ties with the former colonial power. Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris explained that Nigeria’s collaboration with France reflects its commitment to maintaining partnerships with the international community to enhance security, growth and prosperity.
Recently, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) signed a cooperation agreement with France aimed at strengthening revenue systems, digital capacity and cross‑border tax compliance. French President Emmanuel Macron has reaffirmed his country’s solidarity with Nigeria on security challenges, pledging deeper cooperation with Nigerian authorities and broader support for affected communities. Idris emphasized that Nigeria’s openness to global partnerships is a deliberate strategy, stating, “Nigeria has partnerships with countries around the world and will continue to maintain and seek cooperation with all members of the international community.” This stance is particularly relevant as many Francophone nations in the region reassess their relationships with France.
In a separate development, the minister addressed controversy over the death penalty for kidnappers, stressing that the Nigerian government operates within the bounds of the law. He noted that any changes to existing legislation would require deliberation and a decision by the National Assembly. Regarding the Safe Schools Initiative and mass abductions, Idris expressed optimism that government efforts would yield positive results, citing President Bola Tinubu’s call for Nigerians to share this optimism.
