Nigeria’s government has clarified its decision to cooperate with France, amidst a trend of West African countries severing ties with the former colonial power. According to Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, Nigeria’s collaboration with France is driven by its commitment to maintaining partnerships with the international community to enhance security, growth, and prosperity.
Recently, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) formalized a cooperation agreement with France, aimed at strengthening revenue systems, digital capacity, and cross-border tax compliance. Additionally, French President Emmanuel Macron has reaffirmed his country’s solidarity with Nigeria in addressing security challenges, pledging to deepen cooperation with Nigerian authorities and broaden support for affected communities.
Idris emphasized that Nigeria’s openness to global partnerships is a deliberate strategy, stating, “Nigeria has partnerships with countries around the world and will continue to maintain and seek cooperation with all members of the international community.” This approach is particularly relevant in the context of regional dynamics, where many Francophone nations are reevaluating their relationships with France.
In a separate development, the minister addressed the controversy surrounding the death penalty for kidnappers, emphasizing that the Nigerian government operates within the bounds of the law. He noted that any modifications to existing laws would require deliberation and decision by the National Assembly. Regarding the Safe Schools Initiative and mass abductions, Idris expressed optimism that the government’s efforts would yield positive results, citing President Bola Tinubu’s call for Nigerians to share this optimism.
