INEC Announces Bye-Elections in Rivers State

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the scheduling of bye-elections for two state constituencies in Rivers State, Nigeria. The Ahoada East II and Khana II constituencies will hold their elections on February 21, 2026, as disclosed during an extraordinary meeting held by the commission on Monday. This meeting also reviewed preparations for the Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections, set to take place on the same date.

According to the 1999 Constitution (as amended), INEC is empowered to conduct bye-elections to fill vacancies in state assemblies, as stated in Section 116. This provision enables the electoral body to ensure that legislative seats are filled promptly, maintaining the representation of constituents.

The vacancies in the Ahoada East II and Khana II constituencies arose due to different circumstances. The Ahoada East II seat became vacant following the resignation of its former member, while the Khana II seat was vacated after the death of its representative. The Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly formally notified INEC of these vacancies, prompting the electoral commission to announce the bye-elections.

The conduct of these elections is significant as it underscores INEC’s commitment to upholding the constitutional provision that ensures all constituencies have representation in the state assembly. The electoral process is expected to be transparent and fair, allowing voters in the affected constituencies to choose their new representatives.

As the scheduled date approaches, INEC will likely intensify preparations to ensure the smooth conduct of the elections. This includes voter registration, distribution of electoral materials, and deployment of personnel to polling units. The commission’s efforts will be crucial in ensuring that the elections are free from irregularities and reflect the will of the people.

The upcoming bye-elections in Rivers State are part of INEC’s broader responsibilities in managing electoral processes in Nigeria. The commission’s ability to conduct these elections efficiently will be closely watched, given the importance of electoral integrity in consolidating democracy in the country. With the February 21, 2026, date set, stakeholders and voters in the affected constituencies are expected to prepare for the elections, which will determine their representation in the state assembly.
