Novo Nordisk GLP-1 Weight Loss Pill Approved by FDA

Novo Nordisk, a Danish pharmaceutical company, has announced that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved its GLP-1 anti-obesity drug, Wegovy, for administration in pill form to aid in weight loss. This development allows doctors to prescribe the treatment for weight loss to adults with obesity or who are overweight with at least one weight-related comorbidity, such as a heart condition.

The FDA had previously approved a pill for treating diabetes, but this new approval expands the treatment’s use for weight loss. According to Novo Nordisk, the Wegovy pill offers a convenient, once-daily option that can help patients lose as much weight as the original Wegovy injection. The company’s president and CEO, Mike Doustdar, stated that this approval provides patients with a new treatment option that can help them achieve significant weight loss.

The US Obesity Care Advocacy Network (OCAN), a nonprofit advocacy group, welcomed the news, noting that it represents an important opportunity for people living with obesity. The group highlighted that the pill offers an alternative for those hesitant to begin injectable therapy and may provide a potentially lower-cost option. Obesity is a significant health concern in the United States, with an estimated 40% of American adults affected, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The new generation of appetite-suppressing drugs, including GLP-1 agonists such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro, has gained popularity in recent years due to their effectiveness in helping people lose weight. US President Donald Trump recently announced deals with Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly to lower the prices of some of their weight-loss drugs in exchange for certainty around tariffs. While the exact price of the Wegovy pill has not been disclosed, the company plans to launch the drug in the US in January.

This approval is part of a broader effort to address the growing obesity epidemic and improve access to effective treatments. As the pharmaceutical industry continues to develop new therapies, regulatory approvals like this one play a crucial role in bringing these treatments to market. With the Wegovy pill now approved, healthcare providers and patients will have another option to consider in the fight against obesity.
