A three‑storey building at No. 20 Kaduna Street, near Uzuakoli Road in Umuahia, Abia State, has been sealed by the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA) because of serious structural defects that threaten public safety. A preliminary assessment conducted by the agency identified flaws that could cause the building to collapse if left unaddressed.
UCDA General Manager Kingsley Agomoh ordered the occupants to vacate the premises, stressing that immediate action was necessary to prevent loss of life. He explained that the agency’s proactive step aims to protect residents and avert potential disasters.
The UCDA plans to carry out further tests to determine the full extent of the defects and decide whether the structure should be demolished or rehabilitated. Agomoh warned that any building found with similar problems would face comparable action, underscoring the need to adhere to building codes and regulations. He also urged property owners to avoid cutting corners and to prioritize the safety of their structures.
This intervention forms part of the UCDA’s broader effort to ensure that buildings in the state capital meet safety standards and comply with regulations, thereby preventing collapses that can result in loss of life and property. The sealing of the building serves as a reminder to developers and owners to maintain their structures regularly and to place safety above cost‑saving measures.
By taking these proactive measures, the UCDA seeks to mitigate risks, enhance public safety, and protect residents. Property owners are advised to ensure their buildings are safe and compliant as the agency continues its monitoring and regulatory activities in the capital.
