No Governor Can Deliver North to APC

A former governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Adamawa State, Dr. Umar Ardo, has downplayed the impact of recent defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on the party’s chances in northern Nigeria. In an interview with TRUST TV, Ardo stated that no governor can guarantee victory for the APC in the region, contrary to the common belief that governors can deliver their states to the party.

Ardo, who hails from northern Nigeria, emphasized that the region’s voters are independent-minded and make their choices based on personal conviction, rather than being influenced by the party affiliation of their governors. He noted that history has shown that political power in the North does not automatically move with elected officials, and that the APC’s reliance on governors and defections as a strategy for winning elections may not yield the desired results.

The former PDP aspirant warned that focusing on elite politics while ignoring the needs and concerns of ordinary people could backfire for the APC, particularly in future presidential contests. He emphasized that the party’s success in the region will depend on its ability to connect with grassroots voters and address their concerns, rather than relying on the influence of governors.

Ardo’s comments come amid a wave of defections to the APC, with several high-profile politicians, including governors, joining the party in recent months. However, Ardo’s assessment suggests that these defections may not necessarily translate to electoral success for the APC in northern Nigeria. As the party looks to consolidate its power in the region, it will need to develop a strategy that resonates with ordinary voters and addresses their needs, rather than relying solely on the influence of governors and party elites.

The APC’s performance in northern Nigeria will be closely watched in the lead-up to future elections, and Ardo’s comments highlight the complexities of the region’s political landscape. With a large and diverse electorate, the North is a crucial battleground for any party seeking to win national elections. As the political landscape continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how the APC will adapt its strategy to win over voters in the region.
