A Nigerian senator has expressed his intention to persuade a high-ranking government official to switch political parties. Allwell Onyesoh, who represents Rivers East in the Senate, wants to convince Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and join the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Onyesoh, who recently defected to the APC himself, stated that the PDP has not adequately recognized Wike’s contributions, prompting the need for him to join the APC. In a video circulating on social media, Onyesoh emphasized that Wike has done significant work for the PDP, but the party has not shown appreciation for his efforts.
According to Onyesoh, he and his associates will not allow the PDP to undermine Wike’s work or frustrate his efforts. He described Wike as his leader and expressed his determination to ensure that Wike is not taken advantage of by the PDP. Onyesoh noted that he was able to realize his dream of becoming a senator with Wike’s assistance and does not want to see Wike’s work destroyed or undervalued.
Onyesoh also criticized the PDP, stating that the party is in disarray and lacks the ability to recover. He believes that the PDP is “lying frustrated on the ground” and does not see any signs of revival in the near future.
The senator’s comments come at a time of significant political realignment in Nigeria, with several high-profile defections from the PDP to the APC in recent weeks. Onyesoh’s statement highlights the ongoing tensions within the PDP and the efforts by the APC to attract prominent politicians to its fold. The outcome of Onyesoh’s efforts to persuade Wike to join the APC remains to be seen, but it is likely to have significant implications for the political landscape in Nigeria.
