APC Member Warns ADC Over Rotation Convention Breach

Atiku demonstrated he's anti-democracy tenets on BBC interview - Osita Okechukwu

A prominent member of the All Progressives Congress, Osita Okechukwu, has stated that the Independent National Electoral Commission’s rejection of the Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party serves as a warning to the African Democratic Congress. Okechukwu described the rejection as “karma finally taken home,” implying that the PDP’s internal conflicts have led to its current turmoil.

The former Director General of the Voice of Nigeria cautioned the African Democratic Congress to beware of a similar fate in 2027, citing the party’s potential violation of the rotation convention. He emphasized that Nigeria’s Fourth Republic is deeply anchored on this convention as a means of ensuring national unity in a fragile and polarized polity. Okechukwu warned that breaching this convention could have severe consequences for the ADC, as it has for the PDP.

Okechukwu recalled previous instances where the PDP denied prominent candidates from the South presidential tickets, dating back to the 1999 presidential election. He cited the cases of Dr. Alex Ekwueme, Rt. Hon. Dr. Chuba Okadigbo, and Rt. Hon. Edwin Umezoke, among others. These incidents, he claimed, demonstrate the PDP’s disregard for the rotation convention and its potential consequences.

The APC member emphasized that the PDP’s leadership should accept responsibility for the party’s implosion, rather than blaming external factors. He stressed that the African Democratic Congress is on a similar trajectory, assuming that northern voters will support their candidates without considering the implications of breaching the rotation convention. Okechukwu questioned the assumption that the northern electorate will automatically support the ADC’s candidates, citing the sophistication of northern voters and their potential to reject parties that disregard the rotation convention.

The rejection of the PDP’s National Working Committee by the Independent National Electoral Commission has significant implications for Nigeria’s political landscape. As the country approaches future elections, the African Democratic Congress would do well to heed Okechukwu’s warning and consider the potential consequences of breaching the rotation convention. The stability of Nigeria’s Fourth Republic and the effectiveness of its political institutions depend on the adherence to this convention, which ensures inclusion, equity, and a sense of belonging among the country’s diverse population.
