Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, has called on residents and visitors to maintain a clean, healthy, and safe environment during the Christmas and New Year celebrations. In a statement released on Wednesday, Oresanya emphasized the importance of cleanliness and proper waste management, urging individuals to keep their surroundings clean and store waste in covered containers for collection by authorized waste operators.
As part of the state’s efforts to ensure effective waste management, all Private Sector Participants (PSP) operators have been mandated to work around the clock throughout the festive period to collect waste in their assigned areas. Additionally, government waste management equipment and environmental officials have been deployed to various parts of the state to support the PSP operators in maintaining a clean environment.
Oresanya also advised traders to conduct their businesses in a clean and safe manner, particularly during this period of increased trading activities in markets and supermarkets. He warned against street trading, citing the presence of environmental marshals who will be enforcing order in public areas. Furthermore, the commissioner cautioned “emergency traders” who display goods on roadsides and other public areas to relocate to nearby markets, stating that the state government will seize their goods and impose community service for violating environmental laws.
To ensure a safe and enjoyable festive season, Oresanya urged drivers to exercise caution while driving, as street sweepers will be working to keep the state’s roads clean. He also reminded carnival organizers to avoid blocking state roads, as this is prohibited by the state’s environmental laws.
The Ogun State government’s emphasis on maintaining a clean and healthy environment during the festive season is part of its broader effort to promote public health and safety. With the expected increase in waste generation and trading activities, the state’s initiatives aim to mitigate potential environmental and health hazards. By working together with residents, visitors, and traders, the government hopes to ensure a safe and enjoyable celebration for all.
