The All Progressives Congress in Ebonyi State has set January 25, 2026, as the date for its primaries for the upcoming local government and councilorship elections. According to Stanley Emegha, the State Chairman of the party, the announcement was made following a State Executive Committee meeting in Abakaliki. Emegha emphasized that political appointees intending to contest the elections must comply with Governor Francis Nwifuru’s directive to resign before the primaries, with a deadline of December 20, 2025.

The primary election process is expected to commence earlier in January, with Emegha stressing that transparency will guide all party activities. Additionally, membership revalidation will begin once the party receives the required registration code. Emegha also announced the construction of a new APC secretariat in Ebonyi State, which is expected to be completed within six months. The structure is described as a symbol of the APC’s dominance and commitment to maintaining its position as the leading party in the state.

The APC currently holds a significant majority in the state, with 171 out of 171 ward councillors, 13 out of 13 local government chairmen, 24 out of 24 House of Assembly members, six National Assembly members, and three out of three senators. Furthermore, the last opposition federal lawmaker in the state, Iduma Igariwey, has defected from the PDP to the APC, marking a complete consolidation of the party’s political strength in the state.

The developments demonstrate the APC’s commitment to democracy, transparency, and effective governance in Ebonyi State. With the party’s stronghold on the state’s political offices, the upcoming elections are expected to be a significant event in the state’s political landscape. The APC’s efforts to maintain its dominance and ensure transparency in the electoral process are seen as crucial in promoting good governance and accountability in the state. As the primaries approach, the party’s ability to conduct a free and fair election will be closely watched, with the outcome likely to have significant implications for the state’s political future.
