The New Nigeria Peoples Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, expressed sorrow over the sudden deaths of two serving members of the Kano State House of Assembly: Hon. Aminu Ungogo and Hon. Sarki Daneji. Reports indicate that Daneji’s death occurred shortly after Ungogo’s, who was the Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations. The cause of Daneji’s demise remains unknown, while Ungogo, a member of the NNPP, reportedly died after a brief illness.

In a statement, Kwankwaso joined thousands of mourners in paying final respects to the lawmakers, who were laid to rest in separate funeral rites. Hon. Aminu Sa’adu Ungogo, representing Ungogo Constituency, was buried in his hometown in Ungogo Local Government Area. Until his death, he served as Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations and was a seasoned local administrator, having held positions such as Chief Personnel Officer and Director of Personnel Management.

Similarly, Hon. Sarki Aliyu Daneji, representing Kano Municipal Constituency, was buried at the Dandolo Cemetery. He was serving his first term and chaired the House Committee on Hajj Operations. Prior to entering politics, he retired from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps as State Commandant in Katsina. Both lawmakers were described as unwaveringly loyal to the Kano State Government and the Kwankwasiyya movement.

Kwankwaso extended his condolences to the bereaved families, Governor Alhaji Abba Yusuf, the Kano State Government, the Speaker of the House, and the people of Kano State, particularly the constituents of Ungogo and Kano Municipal. Their deaths have significant implications for the Kano State House of Assembly, given the important roles they held in state governance. The focus now is on honoring their memory and supporting their families and constituents, while the Kano State Government and the NNPP consider how to fill the resulting vacancies.
