The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Nigeria has issued a statement emphasizing the importance of prioritizing citizens’ welfare in government policies and actions. This reminder comes as the country celebrates the Christmas season, a time for reflection on the values of love, peace, and goodwill.
In its Christmas message, signed by National Publicity Secretary Comrade Egbeola Wale Martins, IPAC encouraged Christians to renew their faith and commit to selfless service to the nation. The Council noted that Nigeria is currently facing significant challenges, making collective prayers and divine intervention crucial for building a strong, united, and equitable society.
IPAC urged the Federal Government to address the prevailing hardships confronting citizens, in line with the 1999 Constitution, which stipulates that the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government. The Council emphasized that Nigerians deserve tangible dividends of democracy and that the welfare of citizens must remain paramount in all government policies and actions.
Additionally, IPAC called on the Federal Government to resolve discrepancies between the gazetted new tax law and the version passed by the National Assembly before its implementation. The Council stressed that the credibility and acceptance of any law by citizens are essential to its effectiveness and contribution to national development. Prompt resolution of these issues would help alleviate tension in the polity and enhance public confidence.
Despite the current challenges facing Nigeria, IPAC expressed optimism about the country’s future, emphasizing the importance of unity and patriotism in building a nation that reflects the collective aspirations of its citizens. The Council’s statement serves as a reminder of the need for government accountability and the prioritization of citizens’ welfare, particularly during challenging times. As Nigeria continues to navigate its current difficulties, the government’s response to IPAC’s calls will be closely watched, both domestically and internationally.
