A faction of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Kano State has rejected the outcome of the party’s national convention held in Abuja, citing a lack of legitimacy and due process. Senator Mas’ud Doguwa, the factional chairman, described the convention as “illegitimate” and said his faction would not recognize the exercise as legal because court proceedings are still pending.
The convention, organized by the Kwankwaso‑led faction, re‑elected Ahmed Ajuji as National Chairman and Dipo Olayoku as National Secretary, among other officials. Doguwa argued that the gathering was not representative of the party as a whole, noting that critical stakeholders were excluded. He characterized the event as a “Kano convention or, at best, a Kwankwasiyya meeting” rather than a genuine national convention.
Emphasizing the rule of law, Doguwa warned that a democratic party cannot be built on illegality. He called for genuine reconciliation before any credible convention or leadership arrangement can be established, cautioning that attempts to impose leadership without consensus would deepen internal divisions.
The factional chairman also dismissed speculation that his group was backing any aspirant ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly for the Kano governorship race, stating it was too early for such endorsements. He noted that many party members remain aggrieved and that there is no basis for endorsing any candidate at this time.
Doguwa’s rejection of the convention’s outcome highlights growing tensions within the NNPP. While the party’s national convention was monitored by Independent National Electoral Commission officials and the re‑elected leadership has pledged to advance the party’s objectives and win the 2027 general elections, the lack of broad‑based inclusion and respect for legal processes may cause the outcomes to continue facing resistance from aggrieved factions.
