The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticised the Nigerian government for its handling of communication surrounding a recent U.S. terror strike on Nigerian soil. The party called the episode a “disturbing failure of security communication and national leadership,” noting that the United States disclosed details of the operation before Nigerian authorities addressed the nation.

According to reports, news of the U.S. military strike against terrorists in Sokoto State first appeared in verified social‑media posts by President Donald Trump and other American officials. This information was released several hours before the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement acknowledging the operation. The PDP argues that the federal government should have led the announcement, properly informing Nigerians rather than belatedly confirming reports already circulating publicly.

PDP National Publicity Secretary Ini Ememobong said the delayed reaction forced Nigerians to rely on foreign sources for updates on critical security operations taking place within their own territory. The party expressed concern about a communication structure in which foreign powers break the news of security actions in Nigeria before the government does, deeming this approach unhelpful to both the federal government and the citizenry.

The PDP called on the government to ensure that its defence pact with the United States prioritises joint operations that promote capacity building, rather than relying on wholly foreign‑led precision strikes. It believes such cooperation would facilitate knowledge sharing and experiential learning, enabling Nigeria to combat insecurity sustainably and reduce dependence on external assistance.

The criticism comes amid ongoing efforts by the Nigerian government to address the country’s security challenges, including terrorism and banditry. The incident highlights the need for effective communication and coordination between the government and its international partners. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the federal government will respond to the PDP’s concerns and improve its communication strategy and national security framework.
