Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has weighed in on the recent wave of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying the developments vindicate former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike and the so‑called G‑5 governors. In a television interview, Fayose noted that the governors who defected acted in their own interest, seeking to secure their futures and that of their constituents.
Fayose revealed that he had previously warned PDP leaders about potential challenges within the party. He recalled speaking out when the party’s problems began to surface, predicting that the PDP would face significant difficulties. According to Fayose, Wike was open about his grievances, particularly regarding unfulfilled agreements with the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar. He added that Wike and the G‑5 governors, including Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, had fought for their cause and engaged with the party’s leadership on several occasions.
Initially, many Nigerians viewed the G‑5 governors as traitors, but the recent mass defections have altered that perception. The departure of key figures—presidential and vice‑presidential candidates, governors and senators—has lent credence to Wike’s earlier concerns. Fayose observed that the current situation has vindicated Wike, who foresaw the crisis earlier than others.
His comments come as the PDP continues to grapple with internal divisions and defections. Party leadership now faces significant challenges in maintaining unity and cohesion in the wake of these departures. The developments have serious implications for the PDP’s future and its ability to remain a viable opposition force. As the party navigates these challenges, it remains to be seen how it will respond to the concerns raised by Wike and the G‑5 governors, highlighting the need for the PDP to address internal issues and work toward rebuilding trust and unity among its members.
