Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has accused Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde of abusing his power and weakening the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South‑West. In a recent TVC interview, Fayose claimed that Makinde has seized control of prime lands in the state and alienated many of his original supporters, saying “almost everybody who worked for his ascension has been driven away.” He argued that these actions have eroded party loyalty.
Fayose further alleged that Makinde has dismantled the PDP’s structure in the region, stating “Makinde has destroyed all PDP structures in the South‑West.” He questioned the legitimacy of the party’s processes in Osun State, citing an instance where a candidate who did not obtain a PDP form allegedly became the party’s nominee. The former governor also recounted a personal experience, claiming he was targeted during a political event in Osun State and alleging that Makinde orchestrated an attack on him, describing the Oyo governor as inexperienced in political matters.
Emphasizing his own political standing, Fayose described himself as an “elder statesman” who governed Ekiti State without external influence, noting that he “fought his governorship without a godfather.” He openly declared his allegiance to Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, saying, “I’m a Wike person. Anywhere Wike is, that is where I am,” and reaffirmed his loyalty to the PDP with the statement, “I will never join the APC.” These remarks indicate Fayose’s continued commitment to the PDP and his alignment with Wike’s faction within the party.
The allegations against Makinde highlight ongoing tensions within the PDP in the South‑West. Internal conflicts and power struggles could have significant implications for the party’s performance in future elections. As the PDP seeks to regain its footing in the region, addressing these internal issues and presenting a united front to voters will be crucial.
