Nigeria Airstrikes: Senator Urges Calm Amid US ISIS Targets

Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, representing Sokoto South, has urged residents of Sokoto State to remain calm following reports of a United States airstrike targeting ISIS-linked terrorists on Christmas Day. The airstrike, which marks a direct US military action in Nigeria, was reportedly carried out based on intelligence about ISWAP threats.

According to a statement posted on his personal social media account, Tambuwal acknowledged the reports and assured citizens that he is engaging with relevant security agencies to obtain full details of the operation. He emphasized the importance of remaining law-abiding while authorities clarify the situation. “I have noted the reports concerning an airstrike carried out as part of ongoing counterterrorism efforts through cooperation between the federal government of Nigeria and the United States,” Tambuwal said.

The senator assured his constituents that he is working closely with security authorities to ensure that necessary safeguards are in place to protect civilians. “I wish to assure the people of Sokoto South that I am in active talks with relevant security authorities to obtain full details and ensure that all necessary safeguards are upheld,” he added. Tambuwal stressed that counterterrorism operations are aimed strictly at criminal and terrorist elements threatening public safety, not innocent civilians who are often victims of insecurity.

Tambuwal also called on community leaders, traditional institutions, and residents to work closely with security agencies by sharing credible intelligence and resisting misinformation capable of causing fear or heightening tension. The senator emphasized that the protection of civilian lives must remain central to all legitimate security actions. By urging calm and cooperation, Tambuwal aims to prevent unnecessary panic and ensure a peaceful resolution to the situation.

The airstrike is part of ongoing efforts to combat terrorism in the region, with the Nigerian government working in cooperation with international partners to address the threat posed by groups such as ISWAP. As the situation continues to unfold, Tambuwal’s call for calm and cooperation is likely to be crucial in maintaining stability and preventing further escalation. The senator’s efforts to engage with security agencies and ensure the protection of civilians will be closely watched in the coming days.
