Dangote: NUPENG holding Nigeria to ransom – Kalu Aja

A financial analyst has expressed concerns that Nigerians lack trust in the government’s ability to manage tax revenue effectively, amid controversy over new tax laws. Kalu Aja said the trust issue stems from the perceived misuse of taxes by previous governments, which has fostered skepticism about the current administration’s intentions. He emphasized the need for transparency in tax collection and expenditure, citing the luxurious lifestyles of government officials as a contributing factor to public mistrust.

The controversy surrounding the new tax laws has been ongoing, with some lawmakers raising concerns about alterations to the country’s tax code. Recently, Abdulsamman Dasuki, a member of the National Assembly, alleged that changes had been made to the tax laws without proper consultation, sparking renewed debate about the government’s handling of tax revenue and its potential impact on citizens.

In response, the chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, announced that the implementation of the new tax laws would proceed as planned on 1 January 2026. Aja argued, however, that the government’s lack of transparency and accountability in tax matters has eroded public trust and that the government must demonstrate a clear and effective use of tax revenue before introducing new tax laws.

The National Assembly has since ordered the tax laws to be re‑gazetted in an effort to address concerns about the legitimacy of the changes. This development highlights the ongoing challenges facing the government in its attempts to reform the tax system and increase revenue. As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how the government will address the trust deficit and ensure that tax revenue is utilized effectively for the benefit of citizens.

Tax reform is a critical issue with significant implications for Nigeria’s economic development. The government’s ability to manage tax revenue transparently and efficiently will be crucial in building public trust and ensuring the success of its economic policies. As the country moves forward with the new tax laws, it is essential that the government prioritizes transparency, accountability, and the effective use of tax revenue to meet the needs of its citizens.
